New community centre opened in Kelty

A Fife town has celebrated the opening of its new community centre.

Kelty’s £7.3 million facility was officially launched by Fife Council leader David Ross and Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Alex Rowley.

Schoolchildren from Kelty and St Joseph’s primary schools delivered musical performances to mark the special occasion.

As well as a community centre, the building in Main Street houses the library, local office and an extension to Kelty Primary School with two new classrooms and extra toilets.

It also boasts a sports hall, dance and music studios, multi gym, youth club facilities, a learning suite and a crèche and after-school club.

Outside there is a large third-generation football pitch for use by the local semi-professional team, the school and community.

Mr Ross said: “The opening of this new facility is a magnificent development for the people of Kelty and beyond.

“Although it has only been open for a few weeks, I’m pleased to see the extent of it being used and enjoyed by the local community already.

“The new centre is a one-stop hub that is centrally placed within the town and provides a building with civic identity and sense of place.

“It has been a real community effort with local people at the heart of agreeing on what they want.”

Mr Rowley said: “This magnificent new sport and leisure facility is a credit to all the local people who have worked so hard to gain such a facility for the village of Kelty.

“It is also a credit to Fife Council for having the forward vision to create a facility that will serve the local schools and groups as well as whole community and I want to thank everyone who made this possible.”

A memorial stone was unveiled at the opening to David Love, who died earlier this year, and was integral to the design and development of the centre.

He was vice-chairman of the previous Kelty Centre management committee and had worked and volunteered at the centre for many years.

Representatives from the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme also attended to explain the benefits of fibre broadband which is now available to more than 600 households in Kelty.

The centre opens Monday to Friday 8am to 10pm, Saturdays 9am to 6pm and Sundays 10am to 6pm.
