Concerns as Fife College prepares to move out of Cupar

North East Fife MP Stephen Gethins is raising concerns about further education provision in his constituency.
North East Fife MP Stephen Gethins is raising concerns about further education provision in his constituency.

North East Fife MP Stephen Gethins has called for an urgent meeting with education secretary John Swinney as Fife College prepares to move out of Elmwood Campus in Cupar this month.

Mr Gethins said he was very concerned for the future of further education in the area and has asked for a meeting with Mr Swinney to look at the options.

Mr Gethins said any loss of provision would result in “real difficulties” for local students, adding: “This would be particularly problematic for those with learning and mobility issues including young people with special needs.”

Mr Gethins went on to say he has been contacted by several constituents concerned by the loss of either Fife College and SRUC, which owns the campus, and is due to speak to Fife College Principal Hugh Logan to discuss the situation.

He added: “The loss of either Fife College or SRUC, not to mention both, would be a severe blow to the area from both an educational perspective and an economic one.

“Students could face travelling a much greater distance and this could have serious financial implications and perhaps even prevent them from attending college and achieving the qualifications they require.

“A solution must be found that will ensure Fife College makes a long-term commitment to further education in north east Fife. I also hope SRUC will give us the same commitment.”
