The pipe band contest was one of the highlights at Markinch.

Fife’s highland games calendar marched off in fine style with a huge crowd at Markinch.

Hundreds of people descended on John Dixon Park under blue skies for the annual Markinch Highland Games.

The event is the region’s first in the circuit for competitors, many of whom travel across Scotland to compete.

Organisers were expecting a good turnout before the big day, including tourists from overseas, and the sunshine helped to bring in the numbers.

Locals were joined by visitors around the arena for a day of entertainment, including pipe bands, highland dancing, heavy weights and track events.

Markinch’s pipe band contest is the oldest of its kind in Scotland and spectators were treated to a march past of the massed band at the close of the event.

The event got underway just before noon with solo piping competition.

Presiding over the festivities was chieftan Sandy Imrie.

Among the highlights were the heavy events, which included the ever popular caber tossing.

There were also various stalls and a fairground to keep all ages entertained.

This Saturday it is the turn of Cupar to host its highland games, followed by Newburgh on June 18.
