St Andrews residents have been seeing stars — or at least one star  — after One Direction’s Niall Horan was spotted on the Old Course.

The popstar was pictured sitting on the iconic Swilken Bridge after apparently enjoying a round.

The Visit St Andrews tourism group described it as “an exciting day”.

Meanwhile, Mr Horan clearly enjoyed his day out and took to Instagram to tell his followers of an “incredible” day.

“Well that was very special!” he wrote.

“Incredible to play ‘The old Course’ this morning .

Won’t forget this one — Niall Horan

“Amazing views, many memories of watching @theopen on TV and seeing particular shots and players .

“There we were playing it today, incredible.

“Won’t forget this one! @thehomeofgolf.”

Manuela Calchini, Regional Director at VisitScotland, added: “St Andrews has played host to the biggest stars in golf for centuries, but the sight of Niall Horan on the Old Course may well have caused a few putts to go astray.

“I hope he enjoyed the ‘best round ever’ at the Home of Golf!”

Social media users reacted with excitement at the news.

The star was also said to have visited St Andrews Links, where members of staff had the chance to meet him.

A spokesman for the Links said: “St Andrews Links is very proud of its reputation as the Home of Golf and the desire so many golfers from around the world have to come and play the Old Course.

“In the past 72 hours we have welcomed Rickie Fowler and Niall to the Links and are delighted that they both had a great time with us here.

“The response to posting Niall’s picture on the Swilken Bridge on our social media channels has been phenomenal and shows a huge number of One Direction fans are pleased Niall is now part of more than 600 years of ‘history’ at the Home of Golf.”
