Final service after 150 years of worship at Boarhills Church

A much-photographed church hosted its last service after 150 years of worship.

In its scenic setting by the sea, Boarhills Church was at the heart of its rural community near St Andrews since it was built in 1867.

But as it fell into disrepair the C-listed building was used less and less in favour of Dunino Church with which it was linked 50 years ago.

On Sunday, its final service was led by the Rev Russell McLarty, with celebration of communion for a full congregation.

Session clerk Mike Foote said: “This was a significant day in the history of the parish, but the strong community spirit as shown on Sunday will ensure the continued success of the joint parishes and their worship together at Dunino.”

There was sadness at the closure in the village, where generations of families have celebrated weddings and christenings and mourned relatives and friends in the church.

However, parishioners have been travelling to services at nearby Dunino for many years, particularly over the winter when the lack of heating meant Boarhills Church could not be used.

It is being sold by the Church of Scotland for conversion to domestic use but its graveyards will be maintained by Fife Council.
