One lucky Fifer is in the money after seeing their collection of gold coins and rare banknotes fetch £12,000 at auction in Glasgow.
The anonymous seller from Cupar sold seven coins, which date from the early 19th century, and a collection of mostly Scottish banknotes at McTear’s November Coins Auction.
Auctioneers described the bidding on the items as “intense”, with a £5 gold coin from 1893 achieving the top price of £2,400.
An 1823 gold £2 coin secured an impressive £1,300 and an 1969 £100 Royal Bank of Scotland note was bought by an avid collector for £320.
Magda Ketterer, McTear’s Valuations Manager and Asian Arts expert, said: “This is a magnificent collection and we knew there would be a lot of interest in the auction.
“The gold £2 coin was particularly interesting as it featured George IV facing to the left, rather than the usual right facing image.
“Rare coins are becoming more and more collectable and we have seen prices rise considerably over the past few years.
“Very often the owners of these items have no idea how valuable they are so we would certainly recommend having a look in those old boxes in the loft or the back of the cupboard for anything that looks a little bit unusual.
“You just never know, you may be the one coining it in at the next auction.”
