A fire in a block of flats in Dunfermline was started deliberately, investigators say.
Six people, including two children and an elderly woman, were rescued from the block in Norway Gardens in the early hours of Thursday.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Police in Dunfermline responded along with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to an address in Norway Gardens following a report of a fire.
“No one was injured during the incident, which happened around 12.35am on Thursday December 8, however a number of occupants within the stairwell were evacuated as a precaution.
“The fire is being treated as suspicious and officers are currently following a positive line of inquiry.”
The doorway of a ground floor flat in the three-storey building was badly fire damaged in the incident.
However, police declined to comment on how the blaze might have been started while the investigation continues.
Two girls, aged nine and 13, were among those rescued. They suffered some smoke inhalation and were given oxygen.
An elderly woman, who also suffered smoke inhalation, was treated by ambulance crews at the scene.
Having been evacuated from their homes in the early hours, residents were still recovering from their ordeal when The Courier arrived and said they did not want to talk about the incident.
A total of two fire engines had been mobilised by the control room when the alert was raised at 12.35am on Thursday.
Crews dressed in protective breathing apparatus led the occupants of the block to safety.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said fire fighters extinguished the blaze and ensured the area was made safe before leaving the scene at 2.43am.
Officers from Police Scotland attended Norway Gardens on Friday morning to carry out a joint investigation with the fire service.
