One occupied tent was still pitched near Amazon in Dunfermline yesterday as the row over working practices at the warehouse continued.
The Unite trade union said employees had been forced to camp because of the distances they had to travel to work.
John Gillespie, chairman of Unite’s Fife area activist committee, said: “Because very few people living in Fife are working there, people are having to sleep outside.
“It’s a disgrace in this day and age.”
A tent was still pitched on a patch of woodland. It is understood the occupant is an Amazon worker, however, he did not want to comment when approached by The Courier.
It is believed the worker may have been camping at the site for some months, just metres from the persistent rumble of cars along the M90.
A tent belonging to another worker, which was pitched in another area of woodland, has since been removed.
The occupant had said camping was cheaper and easier than commuting to work from his home in Perth.
Still at the site was an abandoned tent containing debris including a rumpled sleeping bag and cider cans.
Mr Gillespie described Amazon as “draconian”.
He added: “It’s like Victorian working practices.”
Trade unions Unite, Unison and GMB will be protesting at Holyrood on Thursday when the Scottish Government sets its budget.
They will be calling for an end to spending cuts.
Mr Gillespie said: “We’ve been outside Amazon a few times recently. If all these companies paid their taxes there would be enough money.
“Our position is quite clear. We have been campaigning against cuts and austerity. There are other ways to do it.”
