Emergency services were called into action in Rosyth when one of the sheltered housing complex properties in Walter Hay Court was seen to be on fire.
Emergency services were called into action in Rosyth when one of the sheltered housing complex properties in Walter Hay Court was seen to be on fire.

A pensioner died as the result of a fire at a sheltered housing complex in Fife.

The large fire forced the evacuation of homes in Rosyth.

The blaze ripped through the roof of bungalows at Walter Hay Court, a complex of 30 houses for retired people.

Emergency crews said one person lost their life. The Courier understands it is an elderly male.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Police in Fife are investigating following a fatal fire at an address in Walter Hay Court, Rosyth.

“The incident happened around 10am on Friday, December 16, when a fire was reported.  Police and emergency services attended, however a body was found within the property.

Firefighters survey the scene

“Police are currently undertaking a joint examination of the circumstances with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.  A report will be sent the Procurator Fiscal.”

Four fire appliances and two ambulances attended the scene, just off the A985 Admiralty Road — one of the main routes through the west Fife town.

Police set up a cordon and directed traffic away from the scene.

The fire service was called at 9am and an eye witness said smoke was initially seen pouring out the windows of one of the buildings.

He said the fire appeared to be spreading along the roof cavities.

Within an hour, flames had broken through the roof.

The Fife Council-run complex was built in 1976 and is described as retirement/sheltered housing.

It includes a lounge, laundry and guest facilities.
