VIDEO: Tommy’s Honour trailer gives glimpse of film about Fife’s golfing pioneers

Movie lovers and golfing enthusiasts eagerly awaiting a new film about one of the game’s great pioneers have had their appetite whetted with its first full-length trailer.

Tommy’s Honour, which was filmed largely at the home of golf in St Andrews, tells the true story of golfing legend ‘Old’ Tom Morris and the at-times turbulent relationship with his son Tommy, who incredibly managed to match his father’s four Open victories before his death aged just 24.

Directed by Jason Connery, son of Sean, the film stars Peter Mullan (Sunshine on Leith) as ‘Old’ Tom Morris, Jack Lowden (’71) as his son Tommy, and Ophelia Lovibond (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Tommy’s wife, Meg, and eagle-eyed visitors to St Andrews over the past year or so may have spotted some of the film’s main protagonists on location.

The production also has an ensemble cast including Jurassic Park star Sam Neill, who takes on the role of Alexander Boothby.

Tommy’s Honour has been given a general release date of April 14 in the United States, and will also be released internationally some time in the spring.

It was given a world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival last summer and received a largely positive initial reception from critics, which bodes well for the film’s wider release this year.

Producer Keith Banks said film-goers could look forward to a “multi-faceted story” that had universal themes, including the father-son relationship, class struggle and love of a game.

The new trailer certainly reflects all of those, highlighting Connery’s Hollywood-style take on the true story.
