A Fife police station was sealed off following the delivery of a suspicious package.
A major emergency response was triggered by the delivery to Levenmouth Police Station, understood to have been made by Royal Mail at around 10.10 am.
Following assessment by firefighters, it was confirmed by Police Scotland that the package, understood to contain a substance, posed no danger to the public or officers.
However, an investigation has been launched into the incident and a hunt is on for the sender.
Witnesses reported seeing several emergency vehicles including ambulances at the station in Methil’s Sea Road.
A police spokesman said the package was not explosive and that bomb disposal experts had not been alerted.
A statement issued by Police Scotland shortly after news of the incident broke said the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was in attendance as a precaution and to assess the item.
Half an hour later police confirmed there was no danger to the public.
A spokesperson said: “Following analysis of a suspicious package sent to Levenmouth Police Station on Tuesday 17th January, it has been established the item is of no risk to the public.
“An investigation is now underway to identify the sender and establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident.”
