Police close the road outside the Fast and Fresh sandwich bar on the A91 just to the east of Guardbridge.

A man has died following a car crash in Fife on Sunday.

The A91 between Guardbridge and St Andrews remains sealed off following the incident, which occurred shortly after 3pm.

Three cars, a silver Mini One, a black Honda Civic and a silver Ford Mondeo, collided at the junction of the C4 Strathkinness junction, around a quarter mile from Guardbridge.

The male driver of the silver Mini died at the scene, while a female passenger  has been taken to Ninewells Hospital for treatment for serious injuries.

The female driver of the Honda Civic has also been taken to hospital for treatment, however, her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The occupants of the third vehicle, a Ford Mondeo, were not injured.

Investigators remain at the scene, however, and the route, one of the busiest in North East Fife, is expected to remain closed until around 10pm.

An investigation into the crash has now been launched, with police urgently seeking witnesses.

Sergeant Nicola Young of Fife Road Policing Unit said: “This collision has tragically resulted in the death of a young man.

“Anyone who witnessed this incident or saw any of the vehicles prior to the collision is urged to contact the police by calling 101.”

It is understood that two female casualties, once extracted from their vehicles by paramedics, were taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee under a police escort.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 15.08 hours today to respond to a road traffic collision on the A91 near Guardbridge.

“We dispatched three ambulances, a trauma team and an ambulance officer.

“The first unit was on scene at 15.09 hours.

Long delays have been reported since the incident, with traffic travelling between Guardbridge and St Andrews being diverted via Kincaple.

Local bus services are also reporting significant delays because of the closure of the route.
