A leading figure in the group created to establish Glenrothes as a visitor destination said that the body is “re-energised” after a stuttering start.

Altany Craik said Go Glenrothes is now ready to play a central role in supporting events and promotional campaigns ahead of the town’s 70th anniversary celebrations next year.

It follows concerns the community-led group had lost direction less than two years after being formed, despite receiving thousands of pounds of council funding.

Acknowledging its rocky start, Mr Craik said the group had made huge strides in recent months.

He said: “It has been a slow start. It has taken much longer to get up to speed but we want to tell people about events like the Comic Con and the comedy festival.

“When you’ve got a small group of people it takes time but now we are at the stage where we are re-energised.

“We are getting a new website and that should help us to reach a much wider audience across the town, across Fife and the rest of the country.”

Hailed as a game changer for the town when it was formed, the group was established as a community-led effort to help Glenrothes shed its New Town stigma and unlock its potential as a visitor destination.

Initially established with £50,000 of Fife Council funding, the group has faced criticism for failing to kick on from its inaugural event, a Johnny Cash art competition staged at the beginning of last year.

However, Mr Craik said that Go Glenrothes was now more focused than ever and was supporting several events, including the town’s first Comic Con in June, which is expected to attract thousands of visitors.

“People thought that we were going to be running events, but we’ve only got a small group of people,” he added.

“Our mission is to sponsor events and promote them, events like the Comic Con, which is going to be fantastic.

“Glenrothes has never had a Comic Con before and the town has never done anything like this before, but we can be creative and exciting.

“I hope that this is going to be a massive success and that people buy into the idea.”
