Police are appealing for help in tracking down the masked armed robber who stole boxes of drugs from a Cowdenbeath chemist.

The incident happened just before 5pm on Friday at Gordons Chemists on Broad Street.

He threatened terrified staff with a knife before stealing “numerous” boxes of prescription medicine.

Detective Sergeant John Easton, of Dunfermline CID, said the stolen medication can pose a serious risk to health and should not be taken unless prescribed for a patient by a health professional.

The man police are hunting is described as 5ft 8in and medium nuild.

He is aged in his late twenties or early thirties and is said to be quietly spoken with a local accent.

He was wearing a dark grey or black woollen hat which he had pulled over his face, with eyeholes cut out.

The man wanted by police was also wearing a dark ribbed hooded jumper, dark combat style trousers and dark green or blue trainers which had shiny leather on the front.

Mr Easton added: “Thankfully none of the staff were injured but this was a distressing experience for them and we’re continuing to conduct a number of enquiries locally.

“We’re asking anyone who may have seen this man in the area, or who recognises his description, to contact us as soon as possible.”

He also urged anyone with information about the whereabouts of the stolen medication to come forward immediately.

Police can be contacted on 101 or information can be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Police taped off part of the chemists in Cowdenbeath on Friday evening.

At that time officials confirmed that officers from Police Scotland were attending an incident on Broad Street, but declined to divulge the nature of the call out.

However, locals claimed the incident was an armed robbery.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “We can confirm there is an ongoing incident in Broad Street, Cowdenbeath.

“Due to operational reasons we are unable to give any further information at this time.”

The chemist lies close to the town’s police station, dubbing one local to say the man “must have been brave, mad or desperate as the police station is 30 seconds behind the chemist.”
