A police search of woodland around Ladybank has been stood down after a missing person was found safe and well.
A helicopter was scrambled from Glasgow and the dog handling unit from Edinburgh drafted in to help scour the area in the Howe of Fife on Wednesday evening.
Several police vehicles were parked on the outskirts of the town and witnesses saw officers walking on foot with dogs around the Monkstown woods and elsewhere.
At around 8pm police confirmed that the adult reported missing had been found.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We were looking for a missing person who has now been traced safe and well.”
However, he said the person was not Margaret Thomson, of Methil, who the force issued an appeal for help in finding earlier in the day.
The 61-year-old has had no contact with friends or family since she was last seen at her home at 10am on Tuesday.
Officers are growing increasingly concerned for her welfare and urged the public to come forward with information.
Sergeant Kirstie McIntosh said: “I am asking anyone who may have seen Margaret or who has information about her whereabouts to get in contact with us.
“Similarly if Margaret herself sees this appeal, I would ask her to contact us or her family to let us know she’s okay.”
Margaret is described as 5ft 7in tall, of medium build, with brown hair, bobbed and with a fringe.
She was last seen wearing a burgundy jacket, black and white trousers, either polka dot or checked, and olive trainers.
