A Fife MC has set his sights on stardom despite narrowly missing out on a place in the grand final of a new TV talent contest.
Viewers of the hit Sky One show ‘Sing: Ultimate A Cappella’ last night saw Steven Buckby, from Cupar, and fellow members of his group Verses make it to the final two of their heat – only to lose out on the judges’ scorecards to a three-piece girl group called Timeless.
Although Steven, who performed alongside Glasgow-based singer Jack Thompson and beatboxing legend Bigg Taj, was disappointed not to progress any further, he hopes the exposure the trio have gained on the programme will lead them on to bigger and better things.
“We came in second but we were all so happy for the girls,” he said.
“Their voices were stunning and the whole thing made me feel truly blessed to be a part of this with my friends.
“I was also a little relieved as the amount of work that went into our three rounds was pretty stressful and as myself, Jack and Taj all live in different places rehearsing was difficult.
“We are all dads and it is hard sometimes to leave your child and hit the road but I think we all know our kids would proud of us when they saw the performances we did on TV.”
The talent show hosted by Cat Deeley, has proved popular with viewers in that it is all about finding raw vocal talent, with no backing tracks or instruments allowed.
With five acts starting last night’s programme, Verses did fantastically well to make it through the first two elimination rounds to make it to the head-to-head with Timeless.
“I remember standing nervously as the first act came on because we had not had the chance to hear anything other than the in-ear headphones that we wore so that we could only hear each other,” Steven added.
“There is no backing track or click track playing as you perform so you really need to rely on knowing each member of your group has rehearsed properly.
“We were completely different to the normal style of A Cappella music so there was always the worry that we wouldnt go down well but everything went really well.
“My time on the show was brilliant and if I could give anyone a piece of advice it would be to pursue your dreams.
“Music has taken me to many places, I have met a lot of amazing talented people and I wouldn’t trade those memories in for the world.
“Hopefully the recognition from the show will mean that we can set up a tour for next year and take Verses to many places in Scotland and the beyond.
“We are now going to take a bit of studio time and release our first official A Capella single at the start of next year.”
