Witnesses who saw a fatal road accident in Leven at the weekend have been urged to come forward as the police probe into the tragedy continues.
Police so far have not named the 68-year-old woman who was knocked down and killed as she crossed the road near the Riverside Retail Park at around 3.45pm on Sunday afternoon, although her next of kin have been informed.
Detectives said they are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the incident in Aitken Street or who may have been in the area just moments before the woman was struck by a white Mazda 2 TS2 as they try to piece together the circumstances behind the accident.
The Courier understands the vehicle involved was being driven by a woman, who was left extremely shaken by what happened but was unhurt, and it is not known at this stage if any charges are likely to be brought against her.
She is also thought to have been offered counselling.
The main road into the retail park was cordoned off by police for several hours following the shocking incident, but it was reopened at around 8pm on Sunday.
It was therefore business as usual at the retail park on Monday, although there was a great deal of sadness among locals at what had unfolded just hours previously.
One shopper, who did not wish to be named, said: “It looked a really bad accident when I came past on Sunday but I didn’t really see what happened.
“All I could see was the car, all the police cars and the ambulance, and there was what looked like clothes lying across the road, so you feared the worst.
“Somebody told me it was an elderly woman who had been hit, but I can’t imagine the car would have been going too fast.
“I think everyone was just hoping whoever was hit would pull through. It’s a real shame, so horrible.”
The 68-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have managed to speak to a number of people who saw the incident, but they believe there may be many more who could help them with the investigation.
Riverside Road, which runs alongside the retail park, also serves the nearby Sainsbury’s supermarket, which would have been busy at the time of the accident.
