GMC hearing to probe Kirkcaldy GP

A Fife GP jailed for downloading “disgusting and depraved” child abuse images will face the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.

Paedophile doctor Calum MacGlone was jailed for four years last October for downloading child abuse images of the most severe kind.

Sheriff Grant McCulloch ordered MacGlone to be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

The sheriff said a custodial sentence was necessary following concerns the level of risk presented by MacGlone could not be properly managed in the community.

MacGlone ran a practice at Kirkcaldy Health Centre until he was suspended from the medical register after the incident came to light.

The doctor admitted taking, or permitting to be taken, or making a number of indecent photographs or pseudo photographs of children.

The offences took place between September 23 and November 8 2016 at his then-home in Kirkcaldy.

Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court heard that while the charge specified a seven-week period, MacGlone had confessed to engaging in this conduct for many years.

MacGlone, who had left Kirkcaldy and was living in Hamilton at the time of his court appearance, had no previous convictions.

When he appeared for sentencing, his defence solicitor said he had been taking advice to try to help his own mindset.

He said MacGlone had been trying to understand his “predisposition” by using a website aimed at addressing his offending behaviour.

The sheriff, who branded the family medic’s behaviour “disgusting and depraved”, told MacGlone the offence met the criteria for imposing an extended sentence.

He was sentenced to four years imprisonment, half of which will be spent on licence under supervision.

MacGlone was also ordered to complete a behavioural programme designed to treat men convicted of sexual offences.

A GPTS hearing, scheduled to last three days, is expected to start on Wednesday in Manchester.

The tribunal will probe an allegation into the conviction and jail term.

It is alleged that Dr MacGlone’s fitness to practice is impaired by reason of his conviction.
