Funding boost to regenerate Kennoway

Kennoway residents have set themselves ambitious goals for the coming five years.

The village has launched its community action plan produced by a local steering group with the support of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust which put up a £25,000 budget to get priority projects up and running.

The plan covers four key areas – local amenities, community activities, roads and transport and the environment.

The plan is calling for improvements to the Bishop’s Court shopping centre, the creation of a community garden and a feasibility study into a floodlit astroturf sports and games area.

It will also see the installation of two life saving defibrillators in the village, with training given, and more activities for young children, teenagers and older people.

The plan looks to investigate social enterprise business opportunities to boost employment and calls for efforts to drum up support for Kennoway Town Pipe Band.

On the issue of transportation, villages are calling on improvements to parking, bus services and traffic calming measures and for a mini road layout where youngsters can learn to ride their bikes.

Meanwhile, there are ambitious plans to see the Den revitalised and better signs throughout the village.

Groups and activities which have already been funded through the budget include the local sports association for local facilities, community council for enhancements to the village, Kennoway Parish Church for outreach work, and the Community Shed, Madison Boxing Club, 2nd Kennoway Brownies and 18th Kennoway Scouts all for new equipment.

Fife Council community education officer Alex Sutherland said: “I was very impressed with the work that has gone into the action plan.

“On behalf of Fife Council we are taking up one of the action points which is community engagement in improvements to Bishop’s Court shopping centre,” he added.

Steering group member Bob McPhail said it was indebted to the trust for its support and financial backing.

“The sum of £25,000 will have a huge impact locally, right across the spectrum of age groups, organisations and activities,” he explained.

Trustee Bob Young added the action plan would ensure the benefits are felt throughout the village.
