Tributes have been paid after the search for missing Cowdenbeath man Steven Cunningham ended in tragedy.

Mr Cunningham, 48, was found dead in Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, on Friday having been missing for 10 days.

Friends took to social media to remember Mr Cunningham, who went by the nickname Flea and was described as a “lovely guy”.

Greig Brown posted on Facebook: “It is with a heavy heart that I write to share the news that my friend Flea was found yesterday in Castle Douglas and is now at peace.

“I’d like to thank everyone for sharing my posts and all the messages I’ve received over the last week, this has not been an easy time for anybody especially his family.”

Mr Brown said Mr Cunningham was a “a truly amazing man”.

Another friend commented: “Heartbreaking news. So sorry to hear this. He was such a lovely guy.”

It is understood Mr Cunningham was a scooter enthusiast and a member of Dunfermline Scooter Club.

He was reported missing on July 12, having last been seen two days before.

The next day a gun metal grey Vauxhall Astra he has access to was seen driving northbound on the M6 near Penrith at around 1.25pm.

Last week, his family made an emotional appeal for him to get in touch.

Relatives said in a statement released through Police Scotland: “We miss you, we love you and we just want to help you.”

Over the weekend, police confirmed that a body had been discovered by a member of the public in Dumfries and Galloway and that Mr Cunningham’s family had been informed.
