A Scots medical student has been jailed in America for attacking a man he thought was having an affair with his Fife-born girlfriend.

Tony Boyd pled guilty to assaulting Stephen Mayer at a property in Waukesha in Wisconsin last year.

The 23-year-old Glasgow University student believed his alleged love rival had been romantically involved with his vet girlfriend Sophie Kelly.

Miss Kelly, who is from Inverkeithing, moved to America to study as a vet last year and boyfriend Tony Boyd went with her to help get her set up.

But the Fifer was forced to call the police following a bust up at her apartment in August 2017 and reported her boyfriend for assaulting her and her male friend.

Boyd was also accused of firing a gun during the incident but reportedly claimed it was an accident as he had never handled a firearm before.

He pled not guilty to all charges at a hearing last year and was allowed to return to Scotland to finish his degree after forking out a $15,000 bail bond.

Following his arrest, Miss Kelly told a newspaper: “When over here, he attacked myself and a friend of mine and fired a gun at us.

“He was arrested and put in the county jail.”

Boyd reportedly said he suspected his girlfriend of having an affair after finding her with Mr Mayer in the bedroom of her apartment.

He claimed he “threw a few punches” and claimed he found the firearm in a bag belonging to Mr Mayer.

The student said: “There were no gunshots fired at anyone, there was no intention of firing a gun shots at anyone. It was a complete fluke accident.

“I dropped the gun and ran out. The police turned up. I gave myself up and told them exactly what happened. I didn’t lie.”

Boyd also faced a charge of committing battery against Miss Kelly which was later dismissed.

The medical student, who lives in Troon, was sentenced to two 30 day prison sentences at Waukesha County Court on Wednesday after admitting assaulting Mr Mayer.

His sentences will run alongside each other meaning he could return to Scotland as early as next month.
