Planners have approved ambitious plans for a new leisure centre in Fife which will be available for community use.
Owners of Clayton Caravan Park near St Andrews have been given the go-ahead to build new development, which will include a swimming pool, spa, sauna, gymnasium and café, as well as an outdoor adventure playground.
The five-star holiday resort, which is situated between Cupar and St Andrews, off the A91, has grown to become one of the largest holiday parks in the country in recent years and although the proposed pool is aimed predominantly at guests staying at the park, members of the public will be able to take advantage of the facilities.
It is understood work could begin on the project as soon as October and those behind the facility are said to be delighted Fife Council planners have granted planning permission this week.
Andrew Kennedy, managing director of Clayton Caravan Park Limited, said: “It’s important that, as the park grows, we continue to invest in new facilities for our loyal customers.
“In addition, as with all of the facilities on the park, this complex will also be open to the local community.
“This will greatly improve the opportunities available for local people to gain access to healthy leisure pursuits.”
The caravan park currently has 462 static holiday home pitches, 50 residential park homes, eight holiday homes available to hire and 30 seasonal touring pitches, making a total of 550 pitches within the site.
In addition, phase two of the new Eden Park development will provide a further 90 fully serviced static holiday home pitches at the park.
As well as the leisure centre building itself, associated infrastructure works will see an extension to the existing car park on site to provide an extra 40 car parking spaces and 10 spaces for cycles.
The development will also see the formation of a temporary construction access onto the A91, with plans suggesting the road will be about 65m to the north-east of the main caravan park access and would allow the existing car park to be open during the construction period.
Agents acting for Clayton Caravan Park argued the plans would both “complement the existing tourist provision and assist in improving the marketability and appeal of the park”.
No objections were received and planners have subsequently rubber-stamped consent under delegated powers.
