A Fife paper mill worker remains seriously ill in hospital after an accident involving a forklift truck on Monday.

The man in his 50s was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, with suspected internal bleeding after being crushed against a wall by the vehicle at the Sapphire Paper Mill in Leslie at around 10.40am.

It is understood he was given a blood transfusion on site before being transferred to a Scottish Ambulance Service helicopter.

Northumberland-based Fourstones Group, which runs the mill on Glenwood Road, has declined to comment on the incident but shocked workers were said to be very upset by what they had witnessed.

Police and officers from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) remained on the site all day on Monday, although production has now returned to normal.

An HSE spokesperson said: “HSE is aware of the incident and making initial enquiries.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said officers had been called by the ambulance service amid reports a man had been struck by a forklift.

She was unable to give any further update on the man’s condition on Tuesday.

Locals reported seeing the air ambulance landing next to the mill, which has been producing thousands of tonnes of tissue for commercial use every year since it opened in 2010.

Previously owned by Smith Anderson, the mill had lain empty for four years before being taken over by owners Peter and Pauline Duxbury.
