Football match tribute for teenage friends killed in car crash

A memorial football match is to be played in honour of two teenagers killed in a car crash near Kirkcaldy.

Ethan King, 17, died at the scene of the smash on the Standing Stane Road on November 11 and Connor Aird, also 17, passed away five days later in hospital.

The pair, who were childhood friends, played for Glenrothes Athletic and friends have organised the tribute which will be played at Starks Park.

Money raised from the December 21 match will go Ethan and Connor’s heartbroken families.

The fixture has been backed by Hearts star Anthony McDonald, who auctioned tops for Ethan’s family, and team mate Connor Smith.

A Twitter account called Connor & Ethans Game has been set up.

Kirkcaldy High School, where the two were pupils, has praised those behind it, tweeting: “Well done to the organisers… a very fitting tribute.”

Ethan’s  funeral is to be held on Wednesday at Kirkcaldy Crematorium with mourners invited to wear orange and black, which are the colours of Glenrothes Athletic, or dress as they would for a night out.

Bright colours will be worn at Connor’s graveside as he is laid to rest at Hayfield Cemetery on December 4.

Collections from both services will be donated to the Scottish Air Ambulance.

Their team mates played their first match at the weekend, which was against Elgin Star.

A post on Glenrothes Athletic Facebook page said: “Boys done everyone proud today. Big thanks to Raith Rovers for hosting the game and their generous contribution to Ethan and Connor’s fund.

“Also thanks to referee Dennis Cotterill for donating his fee, thanks to Elgin Star for supporting us through this emotional day.

“A massive thanks to everyone that came to support and pay their respects to the team and families #athletic family.”

The boys were passengers in the Vauxhall Corsa when it crashed on the A915.

Danny Stevens, 18, was seriously hurt but is recovering from his injuries and visited Kirkcaldy High School on Friday.

The 17-year-old driver, who was also taken to hospital, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
