A Fife grandmother spent 10 days in hospital being treated for broken bones after being mowed down in a “hit and run” in Crossgates.

Sandra MacDougall, 74, said she was “in bits” after a 4×4 knocked her to the ground just minutes after she had been speaking to the driver, who said he was from Aberdour.

She suffered a broken hip and shoulder and is still in pain and unable to walk after the incident.

The 5ft pensioner said the motorist may not have been aware of what happened.

She described the incident on November 2 as terrifying, and believes she escaped death because the car had parking sensors.

“I looked round to my left and saw this monstrosity. The warning lights must have stopped him, otherwise it would have been right over me.

“He put the car into gear and drove away, and here’s me lying on the floor.

“These big 4x4s have bleepers that go off if they go near something or hit something. It’s a huge car park and maybe he didn’t realise I was walking through it.”

The incident happened outside the Royal British Legion in Main Street, where Sandra is chair of the local branch.

She said the man had visited the premises to ask where he could get a Remembrance poppy for his car, because his had been eaten by a spaniel.

Sandra described the man as in his 60s and the 4×4 vehicle as either black or navy in colour.

“I had chummed him back to the car park,” she continued.

“He said he was from Aberdour and had been playing golf that morning.”

She added: “I wouldn’t like to think he had run me down and just driven away.

“I think it has been a freak accident that’s just left me in bits.

“I still can’t walk on my own. I’ve got pain in my shoulder, going down the side I went down on.

“I was perfect before. I’ve never been in hospital for 42 years since my daughter was born. I’ve never been ill.”

Ambulance staff who assisted Mrs MacDougall contacted police, who also attended the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police in Fife were called following a collision involving a car and pedestrian in Crossgates.

“The incident happened in the Main Street area at around 3.10pm on Friday 2 November.

“A 74-year-old woman was taken to the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, with serious injuries.

“Officers are keen to trace the driver of a blue 4×4 style vehicle that they believe inadvertently left the scene after the collision.

“Inquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Fife’s Road Policing Unit via 101, quoting incident number 2361 of 2 November.”
