A young woman was raped after being held at knife point in Methil.
The 20-year-old victim endured what police described as a terrifying ordeal after being forced into an area of wasteland by a man who appeared to be under the influence of drink or drugs.
She eventually managed to escape her attacker and sought the help of two members of the public.
Police have launched an investigation and have urged anyone who recognises the perpetrator’s description to get in touch urgently.
The incident happened at 8pm on Tuesday near Laird Avenue as the woman walked along Herriot Crescent and onto Kirkland Walk.
Detective Chief Inspector Scott Cunningham said: “This has been a terrifying ordeal for the young woman that has left her deeply distressed.
“We are providing her with all the support and assistance she requires while we investigate this very serious incident.”
Uniformed officers are conducting high-visibility patrols in Methil to offer reassurance to the public.
The inquiry by Fife’s public protection unit is being supported by specialist national divisions.
Mr Cunningham said: “As part of this investigation we are keen to hear from anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity within the areas around Herriot Crescent, Kirkland Walk or the wasteland near Laird Avenue during Tuesday evening.
“We have a very good description of the suspect and anyone who believes they can help us identify him should contact police immediately.”
The attacker is described as a white male, around 20 years old, 5ft 8in tall and of medium build.
He has light brown wavy hair and was wearing a dark waterproof jacket and dark tracksuits bottoms.
