Six people have been taken to hospital after a crash between a car and a minibus in Fife.

The casualties had to be cut from the wreckage of their vehicles by firefighters following the accident on the A985 near Dunfermline in the early hours.

The extent of their injuries is not yet known.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the accident, between the Cairneyhill roundabout and High Valleyfield, at around 1.20am on Sunday.

The road was closed in both directions for more than six hours, finally reopening at 7.30am.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “Operations control mobilised two fire appliances to the A985 where a minibus and a car had collided.

“Firefighters safely removed six casualties and transferred them to the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“All six were taken to hospital for further treatment.”

The fire service left the scene at around 3.30am.

Police warned motorists to avoid the area in the wake of the crash and diversions were in place while investigations were carried out.

In an initial statement, a police spokesperson said: “Please be advised that the A985 Carineyhill roundabout westbound to High Valleyfield is currently closed in both directions as emergency services respond to a road traffic collision.

“Please avoid the area wherever possible. Diversion signposted.”

Officers said they were unable to give any further details about the accident but confirmed the road had reopened.
