Rosyth calls for old function suite to be demolished after fire

A fire in an abandoned building in Rosyth has prompted renewed calls for it to be demolished before someone is hurt.

The former Yard function room went up in flames on Sunday evening.

No one was hurt but there are concerns about the state of the structure, which has been plagued by vandalism.

Assurance was given to the community that the Admiralty Road building would be pulled down within a few weeks.

The site’s property developer McTaggart & Mickel, which recently said it remained in talks with retailers including Lidl over its sale, said it hoped this would be done by the end of the month.

Anger was expressed on social media about the impact of antisocial behaviour at the premises on nearby business and residents.

Fiona Meade, secretary of Rosyth Community Council, said people want to see the building go sooner rather later.

She said: “This has been brought up numerous times at our community council meetings.

“There has been an increase in incidents of youths hanging about there. It seems to be any time there is a school holiday it is targeted.

“We had been told it was meant to be getting demolished in the next four to six weeks but it looks like the kids have got there sooner.

“It is right next to a petrol station and the owner of the house beside it has had problems.

“It’s also an eyesore at the entrance to Rosyth. As you come in from Kincardine it’s the first building you see.”

Craig Ormond, director at Mactaggart & Mickel, said: “We have been attempting to commence the demolition of the building for a number of months.

“Over the last few weeks a number of utilities and services have now been disconnected to allow demolition work to take place.

“The final service to be disconnected is the telephone line and the telephone pole has been relocated accordingly.

“Work to demolish the building will take place over the coming weeks and we expect this to be complete by the end of June.”
