Two men are expected to appear in court today after a woman was allegedly shot in the chest on a Kirkcaldy street.
Police were called to the scene, near the Novar Bar in the town’s Nicol Street, shortly before 2pm on Sunday.
They swooped on the area, just off the High Street, amid reports of an ongoing incident involving weapons being brandished.
The 47-year-old woman was found to be suffering various injuries, including one to her chest, which police said was believed to have been caused by an air weapon.
The woman was taken to the town’s Victoria Hospital by a passer-by. She later discharged herself.
Police investigations throughout the afternoon and into the evening centred on both Nicol Street and Ivanhoe Drive in Glenrothes.
Three arrests were made but a spokesman for Police Scotland confirmed one person had been released without charge.
Two men, aged 21 and 36, were detained in custody and will appear at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court today.
Police said they were continuing to follow “positive lines of inquiry”.
Detective Inspector Paul Dick said: “I want to stress again that this has been an isolated incident and we do not believe there is any wider risk to the general public.
“Two men had now been charged as part of this investigation but we are continuing with our inquiries and would urge anyone who believes they have any relevant information to contact police immediately.”
He also thanked members of the public who helped police and paid tribute to all the officers involved.
One good Samaritan was Bobby Scott, who was returning to work when he saw the commotion, and rushed the victim to hospital while her son tended to her injuries.
Yesterday he passed on the “utmost gratitude” from the woman to all those who had asked about her health.
Saying she wanted to stay anonymous, he said she couldn’t thank everybody enough for their kind words.
“She is truly grateful to all.”
Mr Dick added: “Crime of violence will not be tolerated in the kingdom and through Operation Path we will utilise all resources at our disposal to identify perpetrators of such offences and bring them to justice.”
