Police have confirmed that a major blaze which forced the evacuation of part of a Fife street was suspicious.

Firefighters were called to Links Street in Kirkcaldy after flames broke out at the property on Sunday, September 15 at about 3.40am.

The blaze forced the evacuation of a number of neighbouring properties.

The home was significantly damaged in the fire.

An investigation has now concluded that the blaze was started deliberately.

Nobody was injured in the fire.

However Detective Sergeant Daryn Bryson from Kirkcaldy CID said it was only the work of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service that prevented the flames from spreading even further and causing more damage.

Det Sup Bryson added: “Deliberately starting fires is an extremely dangerous and reckless act. It was down to the swift actions of emergency services that the incident did not escalate.

“Following a joint investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, we have established that the fire was a deliberate act and a criminal investigation has been launched.

“As part of our investigation we would be keen to hear from anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity in this area overnight.

“Likewise, anyone who believes they can help us trace those responsible, or who may have any residential CCTV or dash-cam footage, which may be of interest, should contact police immediately.”

Anyone with information is being asked to call Kirkcaldy CID on 101 quoting the incident number 0802 of September 15 2019. Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
