Plans to create a new £100,000 multi-use games area in a popular Cardenden park have been unveiled.

The village’s community development forum has been working with Fife Council’s parks department for some time on the project in Wallsgreen Park, but local authority planners have refused to accept a planning application until a flood risk assessment was submitted.

The plans, led by the council, have now formally gone through the initial stages of the process and are expected to be approved in due course.

A new synthetic pitch, suitable for various sports, will be installed. It will be surrounded by a five-metre-high mesh fence with floodlights on eight-metre-high columns.

David Taylor, from Cardenden Community Council, said the area of land outlined for the project had not been affected by any drainage problems in recent memory.

“There was concern that there was a risk of the park flooding, but assurances have been given that no flooding has occurred in the past 30 years,” he said.

“We hope that work gets underway as soon as the plans are approved.

“This long-awaited facility will be a great asset and will accommodate games, such as five-a-side football, basketball and tennis.”

The Coal Authority has said it has no objection to the development but asked that a “careful watch” be kept during preparation and development works for any evidence of past mining activity.

If signs are found, they should be thoroughly investigated, the organisation said.

However, it stressed that mine workings in the area were likely to be old enough and deep enough that they would not cause any concerns.

Council planners are expected to recommend approval for the proposals by the end of the year.
