The lorry’s load was left a smouldering ruin by the side of the A90.

Smoke was seen billowing from the road during the dramatic incident.

The eastbound section of the dual carriageway was closed as emergency services dealt with the blaze.

Motorists were told to avoid the area.

On Saturday morning a fire and rescue spokesman said: “We are currently in attendance and have two appliances there on the A90. We were called at 7.50am.

“The carriageway is closed. Police are in attendance. It is a lorry on fire.”

Two fire and rescue appliances are at the scene – one from Perth and another from Dundee’s Macalpine Road.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Traffic Scotland posted: “The A90 is closed northbound at Inchture due to a vehicle fire. Road users are advised to seek an alternative route at this time.”

Tayside Police Division posted: “Officers are currently dealing with an incident on the northbound A90.

“The northbound carriageway is closed at Inchmichael and diversions are in place.”

A spokesperson for BEAR Scotland said:  “Our teams assisted Police Scotland and Fire Services who were responding to a vehicle fire on the northbound A90 near Inchture earlier this morning.

“The road was closed for safety while Fire Services addressed the fire and our teams provided traffic management to help direct traffic via a local diversion.

“One lane was opened to traffic at around 9.40am, with one lane remaining closed for safety to allow for the recovery of the vehicle and clear-up of the fire, as well as to allow teams to inspect the road surface for any damage.”
