Perth man, 21, used Snapchat mapping app to follow teenage ex-girlfriend

A Perth man who stalked his teenage victim’s movements through a mapping app has been ordered to carry our unpaid work.

Samuel Hill used Snapchat to monitor the girl’s location after their brief relationship came to an end.

The 21-year-old spent six months harassing the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, before she went to the police.

He admitted the crime and appeared for sentence at Perth Sheriff Court this week. He was handed a two-year non-harassment order and told to carry out 98 hours of unpaid work.

Sheriff William Wood said: “There was a significant age disparity when this offence was committed – the complainer was a child of 15, you were a male of 20.

“The conduct took place over five months. You would have thought a man of your age would have thought better of carrying out this conduct.”

The court previously heard the girl – who is now 16 – became concerned that Hill often appeared to know where she was and turned up at locations uninvited.

Depute fiscal Tina Dickie said: “He took the end of their relationship badly and he messaged and telephoned her using social media continually.

“He was seen sitting outside in his vehicle, across from her home address. He also attended outside homes belonging to her relatives.”

In May 2018 the girl told Hill she no longer wanted to be friends with him.

“She was frightened by his behaviour and asked him to stop contacting her,” said Ms Dickie.

“He accused her of cheating on him with another male and he admitted to seeing her location on a mapping application.

“He kept turning up where she was out of the blue. He gave her a letter telling her he had fallen in love with her.

“She believed he was able to follow her on the Snapchat map and this is how he knew where she was and how long she would be at a place.”

Hill, of Airlie View, Alyth, admitted engaging in a course of conduct which caused fear or alarm to the girl between May 20 and November 1 2018.

He also admitted driving past and sitting outside her home, sending messages to her and monitoring her position using Snapchat mapping, at various locations around Perthshire.
