Retail giant Debenhams has announced it will be reopening its Perth and Dunfermline branches next week.

The chain will lift the shutters at six of its stores across Scotland on Monday June 29 in line with the easing of lockdown regulations announced by the government last week.

The Dundee branch in Overgate will remain closed for the time being as it is located within a shopping centre, but is expected to reopen in July.

The announcement from Debenhams spells good news for both Perth and Dunfermline high streets with the future of the crisis hit retailer under threat in both areas.

Debenhams slid into administration in April in a bid to protect the business, which was forced to shut down its 142 UK stores due to coronavirus.

However, the chain was troubled before the outbreak, with 22 shops closed earlier this year, including its Kirkcaldy branch.

In Dundee, stunned cafe staff were made redundant in May despite thinking their jobs were safe after lockdown.

Steven Cook, managing director of  Debenhams, said: “We look forward to welcoming Welsh and Scottish customers back to our stores in the coming weeks in the confidence that our customers and colleagues are finding our extra safety precautions reassuring without impeding their comfort or convenience.”
