Witnesses tell of ‘escalation’ as emergency services block off Perth city centre streets

Two Perth city centre streets were blocked off on Wednesday morning as officers responded to a report of concern for a person.

Emergency services erected cordons around Canal Street and Princes Street for around two hours from 9.40am, restricting sections of both streets to traffic and pedestrians.

Officers were responding to concern for a person report on Canal Street around the multi-storey car park area.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) sent four appliances to the scene at the behest of Police Scotland with the ambulance service also in attendance.

Witnesses on Princes Street told The Courier the incident “escalated” around 10am when the majority of emergency services descended on the street.

One worker said there had been no communication from police as they blocked off the road in front of the shop he was renovating.

Canal Street opened back up to traffic around 11.30am with officers still crowded around the multi-storey car park.

SFRS began to remove the blockade from Princes Street shortly after.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called at 9.40am to concerns for a person.

“A person was passed into the care of the ambulance staff.

“There will be no further police action.”
