The historic golf course at Taymouth Castle in Highland Perthshire was the setting for a Father’s Day challenge.

Friends Damien Gilmore, 39, Steven Roberts, 37, Mark Wells, 33, and Ryan Campbell, 29, set themselves the task of playing 72 holes, taking 300 strokes and walking nearly 20 miles as part of the Macmillan Cancer Support charity’s Longest Day Golf challenge.

The group were given free and exclusive use of the golf course which has recently been redesigned by Stephen Gallacher and are on course to raise £3,000.

Alex McEwen, from Taymouth Castle, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer support. It is for such a great cause and hopefully the redesigned course will be a fun course for them to play.”

All the friends, who are from Kirkliston and Kinross, have had friends or family supported by Macmillan over the years, but father-of-one Steven has had the most contact with the charity after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Kirsty, who is now in remission following chemotherapy, radiotherapy and two separate mastectomy reconstruction operations, was supported by Macmillan throughout her treatment.

Speaking prior to setting out Damien said: “We can barely manage nine holes between us these days, so it will be a challenge albeit a fun one.”

The group held an additional fundraiser where people who donated £10 to their Just Giving page were entered into a draw to win various prizes including corporate hospitality tickets to one of Dundee FC, Dundee United FC or Inverness Caley Thistle FC home games and golf lessons.
