A lifelike wooden woodpecker with real pecking power has taken up residence in a Perthshire pine tree, thanks to its art student creator.
Woodland Trust Scotland runs an annual competition for students at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee to come up with a piece of work that will engage visitors at its Moncreiffe Hill Wood just outside Perth.
Fine art student Ken Bambury from Dundee is this year’s winner.
“When I visited Moncreiffe Hill I heard a woodpecker,” said Ken. “Then I remembered those toys you used to get with the bird drumming down a pencil.
“That’s what gave me the idea. It is something I hope children will enjoy, and I hope parents will bring them along to see.”
A rope pulled from the foot of its tree makes the woodpecker peck with a lifelike action and noise.
Woodland Trust Scotland site manager Jill Aitken said: “The wood probably has more art than many galleries.”
