The site of the former Fishers’ Laundry in Aberfeldy could be developed for housing.

The 1.99 acre site on Home Street has been put on the market as suitable for a potential residential development.

The site includes the former laundry buildings – consisting of the main factory, offices, garment department and warehouse  – and Parkfield House, a two storey detached home which was used as office accommodation.

Nina Stobie, director with JLL who are marketing the site for Fishers’ Services for an undisclosed sum, said: “The central location within the town centre makes it an ideal opportunity for residential development, although the site would also be suited to mixed use development, subject to obtaining necessary planning consents.”

The closure of the laundry, which employed 43 people, was first announced at the end of last year.

One of the area’s longest-established businesses, the announcement was a blow to the town’s economy.

However the move was softened by news staff had an option to relocate to Perth’s Inveralmond industrial estate or Glasgow and many chose to do so.

With more than 100 years of history in the town, Fishers’ managing director Michael Jones described the closure as “sad”.

The decision to close the Aberfeldy operation followed a review of the operational effectiveness of all six of Fishers’ laundries alongside the announcement that Fishers was to open a new laundry in Coatbridge to serve customers in Glasgow, the west of Scotland and the north west of England.

The company invested £5 million in the facility.
