Former police officer Douglas Stewart

Long-serving Tayside Police officer Douglas Stewart from Kinross has died aged 76.

Originally from Edinburgh, Mr Stewart attended Trinity Academy where rugby and cricket were among his passions.

He set his sights on becoming a farmer and when he left school became a dairyman in Fife where he met his wife Janice. After marrying  in 1962  they moved to Carrbridge where they spent happy years farming at Dalnahaitnich.

Mr Stewart then joined the Perth and Kinross constabulary in 1966 which in 1975 merged to become part of Tayside Police.

He spent seven years in Perth then seven years in Kinross before moving to Comrie where he was village bobby.

Later Mr Stewart was part of the crime prevention team based in Perth and he spent his last years in Crieff before retiring in 1995.

Mr Stewart’s passions included fishing, farming, his dogs, gardening and grouse shooting.

A lifelong Hearts supporter Mr Stewart also had a good singing voice and performed at Edinburgh Playhouse with the Cala Rossa Operatic Society and even turned his hand to acting with an amateur dramatic society Crieff.

Mr and Mrs Stewart travelled to many countries and India became a “second home” over the winter for them and the couple were also stalwarts of Kinross Bowling Club in recent years.

He is survived by his wife Janice, children Grant, Morag and Christine and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
