Ewan McGregor backs charity efforts of Crieff High pupils

Hollywood superstar Ewan McGregor has thrown his support behind a charity walk by youngsters from his Perthshire home town.

The Trainspotting and Moulin Rouge star tweeted “good luck”  and “bravo”  in support of the forthcoming efforts of Crieff High School  pupils who will be raising money for three charities.

The actor, himself a former pupil of Morrison’s Academy, may have had his interest piqued by the fact that two of their causes are close to his heart – Unicef and CHAS.

McGregor, whose family still live in the Crieff area, has been a Unicef UK Ambassador for 12 years and has visited Rachel House in Kinross, a respite centre run by CHAS, to show his support.

He has supported Unicef since his motorbike adventure, The Long Way Round, in 2004 and last year he travelled to northern Iraq to see how the conflicts sweeping across Iraq and Syria are devastating children’s lives.

During his visit, he met with families in the Debaga camp who have escaped violence currently taking place in areas surrounding Mosul in the north of the country.

McGregor and his father Jim famously dropped in at Rachel House on their motorbikes.

On a YouTube video the Crieff High School Interact Group explain that they will be walking on March 23 when they hope to cover the same distance that refugees making their way from Syria to Munich would.

As well as raising money for Unicef and CHAS they will also be supporting BSSA, a charity which raises awareness of Sjogren’s Syndrome, an auto immune disease.

The past year has been a high profile one for McGregor as he reprised his role from Trainspotting for the sequel.

He has also been filming for the black comedy television series Fargo in which he will take on two roles, playing brothers.
