Fears that teenager jumped into River Tay in Perth prove to be groundless

A coastguard helicopter searches the River Tay, Perth, on Monday evening.

Fears that a teenager had jumped into the River Tay in Perth have proved to be groundless.

Police have confirmed that a member of the public contacted them “with good intent” after seeing the youth walking on a parapet of the Queen’s Bridge in Perth around 8.45pm on Monday.

It had initially been thought the teenager may have entered the water and a major river search was immediately launched, involving Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue, HM Coastguard and RNLI.

However, this proved to be groundless and it’s understood there are no reports of a missing teenager at this time.

On Tuesday, police continued to make inquiries into the matter after stating they are keen to speak to a person seen jogging near the Queen’s Bridge at the time, in the hope they might shed some light on the matter.

Inspector Kevin Chase said: “We are carrying out further inquiries following concerns from a member of the public that a young person was seen on the parapet of Queen’s Bridge in Perth at about 8.45pm on Monday.

“The person was seen to walk along the wall before being lost to view a short time later.”

He continued: “The teenager is described as wearing a dark hooded top with the hood up and dark trousers.

“As our inquires continue, we are particularly keen to trace a jogger who was wearing a red t-shirt with a white logo on the back, with dark coloured trousers, who was seen to run past a person turning left off Queen’s Bridge on to Tay Street at about 8.45pm on Monday.

“Anyone who was in the area at the time or anyone who has information that could assist with our inquiries, is asked to contact the police on 101.”
