Police woman assaulted in culmination of thug’s Perth crime spree

A violent thief who smashed a glass bottle over a female police officer’s head has been remanded in custody.

Stefan Scott admitted a string of charges, including stealing a tub of contraceptive gel from a cut-price store, when he appeared at Perth Sheriff Court.

The 24-year-old assaulted police constable Mandy Shepherd as she carried out her duties on Perth’s South Methven Street on July 18, striking her on the head with the bottle and causing her injury.

The attack followed a number of offences which had taken place over the preceding weeks.

The spree began on May 25 when he stole a container of contraceptive gel from the Home Bargains store in St Catherine’s retail park in Perth.

On July 14 he was caught riding a motorcycle on the city’s Dunsinane Drive while almost twice the legal drink drive limit. A breath test revealed he had 41 mics of alcohol in his system, far above the legal limit of 22.

At the same time police officers discovered that he was not insured to ride the vehicle.

On the same day that he assaulted the police officer, he went on a wrecking spree in Perth city centre, including on George Street and the High Street.

Scott behaved in a threatening and abusive manner by pushing a BMW motorbike, causing it to fall to the ground and damaging it in the process.

He went on to repeatedly shout, swear and utter abusive and offensive remarks to members of the public before challenging them to a fight while brandishing a glass bottle.

He also repeatedly kicked a door, behaved in an aggressive manner and struggled with police officers.

Scott, of Rannoch Road, Perth, was remanded in custody and will be sentenced next month once reports have been obtained.
