The incident happened on the A923 Dundee to Coupar Angus road, near Tullybaccart at around 2.31am on Saturday.

The road has now been cleared and re-opened.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said a male casualty was taken to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, by ambulance crew. Police said the 18-year-old later died from his injuries.

Four other people were understood to have been in the car and they were treated for minor injuries by paramedics.

The SFRS spokesperson added that two fire units from Dundee had attended at the scene.

Tributes to the teenager have been posted on social media.

Carol Suzanne Thomson said: “RIP, so young. Really sad news. Thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Allan Batchelor added: “Not good to hear. It’s full of bends around that area.”

And Sarah Burke commented: “Most down to earth boy you could ever meet. Rest easy big man.”

Meanwhile, Wendy McKenzie posted: “RIP – lovely young lad. Thoughts are with his parents.”

Lisa Jane Potter described the fatality as “heartbreaking.”
