A Perth society which has supported some of the world’s most famous explorers is extending a helping hand to the next generation of adventurers.

The Royal Scottish Geographical Society (RSGS) is holding a two-day Christmas fair next month in its iconic headquarters, the Fair Maid’s House.

All profits raised will go towards supporting the charitable work carried out by the RSGS and to help finance an adventurous trip to the jungles of Myanmar (formerly Burma) being planned by students from Perth Academy.

In 2019 a group of 20 youngsters will complete a lengthy trek through areas of wild jungle and carry out philanthropic projects to help local communities.

Students from the school will be helping manage the stalls at the RSGS fair and organise the venue.

The all-important planning stages of the trip will encourage the students to develop a number of transferable skills including how to organise and prepare for a major adventure, how to budget sensibly, and how to raise funds through community activities.

RSGS CEO Mike Robinson, said: “The RSGS has had an action-packed year, and the Christmas fair is a brilliant way to celebrate all that’s been going on.

“Whilst the fair will provide a wealth of Christmas gift inspiration, it’s as much about having fun, meeting people involved with the RSGS, and indulging in some Christmas treats.

“It’s also a chance to bring the community together and to help raise money for our charitable work and the adventurous students from Perth Academy.”

The fair is on Saturday and Sunday December 9 and 10 from 10.30am to 4pm.

On sale over the weekend will be the last few remaining prints of a recently commissioned painting by artist Rob Hain, an amusing and vibrant depiction of Perth’s buildings and characters.

For the more well-heeled the original is for sale for £7,500.
