One of Scotland’s busiest roads was closed as police evicted pensioner Charles Ingram from his roadside camp.

The A9 was locked down between Blair Atholl and Dalnacarnoch for about an hour on Thursday morning.

Mr Ingram, who is in his 70s, has been staying in his car in layby 52, south of House of Bruar, for several years.

He was first removed by police in September 2015 and has spent the last two years drifting between locations.

Mr Ingram returned to the A9 in a 14-year-old Fiat Panda in November.

It is understood Mr Ingram left his roadside home “without incident” during Thursday’s operation.

The route was shut off to motorists in both directions near Blair Atholl from about 11.20am until noon.

Traffic Scotland said that “an operational incident” was behind the closure. A spokesman said a statement would be issued soon.

Tayside Police Division have been approached for comment.
