Engineers were forced to lock down a Perth street after construction workers hit a gas main.

SGN crews were scrambled to the city’s Gannochy Road on Tuesday evening.

A roadblock and traffic diversion signs were put in place as workers assessed the damage to an underground pipeline. The mile long stretch of road was closed off overnight.

Locals said construction teams had been working on site prior to the emergency. It is understood they were involved with preparatory survey work for a major housing development on neighbouring farmland.

SGN spokesman Waseem Nanif said: “We’re carrying out emergency repairs to our gas main in Gannochy Road, Perth, following damage caused by a third party.

“To ensure everyone’s safety around our work area, we’ve had to temporarily close Gannochy Road between its junctions with Annat Road and Dupplin Road.”

He said: “Our repairs have progressed well and are now complete. The road surface is currently being reinstated and restored.”

He said two-way traffic lights were needed to keep motorists safe while one lane was remained closed. The street was expected to be fully re-opened by Thursday morning.

Locals said SGN engineers visited their homes during the operation to check gas supplies.

No properties were evacuated.

The gas main was damaged during survey work for a new housing project for the Gannochy Trust.

The organisation won consent to build 48 homes on the existing Gannochy Estate. The project is described as a key part of an anticipated £25 million of investment by the trust in the Perth and Kinross area over the next five years.

The plan was launched in 2012 to mark the trust’s 75th anniversary.

No one at the Gannochy Trust was available to discuss the survey work, which was carried out by a Fife construction firm.

Almost exactly a year ago, SGN engineers battled for a week to restore gas supplies to more than 1,300 homes in nearby Scone.

The emergency work was needed after another gas main was damaged. It took several days to locate the source of the leak before repairs could begin.
