Noel Gallagher will play to thousands of fans in Tayside on the same night as the Champion’s League final – which may or may not feature his beloved Manchester City.
The Sky Blues will face off against FC Basel in round 16 of Europe’s top footballing competition on Tuesday with the quarter final draws announced on March 16.
The former Oasis guitarist and singer-songwriter, who penned some of the most famous songs of the 1990s, is a die-hard Man City fan.
He was announced as one of the main headliners to play BBC’s The Biggest Weekend on Saturday, May 26 at Scone Palace. Tickets went on sale on Monday morning.
However in a January interview with Chris Evans on Radio 2, given following the announcement he would play the gig, Gallagher joked he’d rather play the Coventry leg of the festival so that he could watch the football match.
Man City have never made it further than the semi-finals in the Champions League, however the incredible form of Pep Guardiola’s side in the Premier League has led to renewed hope the squad can make it all the way this year.
The Champions League final will take place in the NSK Olimpiyskyi Stadium in Kyiv on May 26.
Speaking to BBC DJ Evans on January 30, Gallagher said: “I got told about a couple of months ago and they were saying that because Glastonbury’s not on that the BBC are (at a bit) of a loose end over the summer and they were putting on all these gigs, and did I want to do this thing in Perth?
“And I said, ‘In Australia? That’s going to be a bit weird for Radio Two isn’t it?’ So if anybody is listening online in Perth in Australia, it’s not there.
“So I agreed to do it. Then I found out it is the same night as the Champions League final. And I’ve just been outside saying, ‘Why can’t I do the Coventry gig? Why do I have to do that on the Saturday?’
“But you don’t go to Perth very often playing a castle, do you?”
However Gallagher said in another interview that if Man City reach the final and win the game, he “wouldn’t care” about being on stage on the night.
