An elderly Perth couple described the aftermath of a car smashing through a wall near the Broxden Roundabout.
The couple, who asked not be named, were not at home when a black car smashed though a metal barrier and stone wall near their back garden but returned to witness the clear-up operation.
Police attended the scene at about 3pm on Wednesday and the couple who live on Innerleithen Way returned home after an afternoon out around an hour later. They say the driver had already been taken away in an ambulance.
The car and a lamppost it struck were taken away at about 5.30pm but debris from the vehicle could still be found at the scene the next day.
A gaping hole in the brick wall and the mangled wreckage of the metal barrier, surrounded by police tape, were still in evidence on Wednesday.
There is a buffer zone between the married couple’s garden and the wall, meaning none of the bricks or car parts fell on to their property.
The husband said: “It was quite a shock to come home to. We went up to ask the workers if anyone was hurt but they said they weren’t.
“We do not know what happened, but there was no sign of skid marks so it doesn’t look like they were driving too fast.
“I’m glad we weren’t in as it would surely have been a loud bang. We’ve never seen anything like this here before. Even though it’s a busy bit of road, we never really hear the traffic unless we’re in the back garden.
“It’s just as well there wasn’t any pedestrians there at the time. That metal barrier is supposed to keep people off the road, not keep the cars off the pavement.
“I was impressed with the car because the front seemed to be demolished, but the interior looked fine.”
A police spokesman confirmed officers had attended the scene of a single-car collision, saying a car struck a lamppost before hitting a wall.
The spokesman added that the driver was checked over by paramedics, but was not badly hurt.
