Two youths who jumped into the River Tay in Perth in an incident which sparked a major emergency operation, managed to evade police.

Police today confirmed that officers had failed to apprehend the two youngsters near Moncreiffe Island, Perth, on Wednesday, after they had twice jumped into the water from the Queen’s Bridge.

Emergency services arrived at Tay Street around 3.47pm on Wednesday after a member of the public had contacted them to say the two youngsters had taken off their t-shirts, plunged into the water, come out and then re-entered the river.

A bystander, who wished to remain anonymous, said firefighters deployed a boat in an attempt to help the youths back to dry land, but added the pair had then swum to Moncreiffe Island.

A police spokesperson today confirmed the youths ran off from the police.

“The youths eventually left the water and ran off from police, so they weren’t arrested,” he said.

It has become a common occurrence for youths to jump off the Queen’s Bridge into the River Tay during the summer months.
