A widow from Perth is shaving her head in memory of her husband.
Jan Boyter lost her husband Peter in May, just four months after he was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, aged just 52.
When the North Muirton couple found out about Peter’s illness, they agreed to shave their heads together.
But Peter, who also had multiple sclerosis, deteriorated quickly and was too ill to go ahead with the touching act of solidarity.
Now Janet, 55, has pledged to do it alone.
The former nurse, who was a full-time carer for her husband before his death, is being sponsored by friends and family, with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support.
She said: “I’m kind of nervous but I’m also looking forward to it.
“Before Peter died I promised him I would do it because we were going to do it together before he became too ill.
“Now I’m going to do it in his honour.”
Hairdressers at the Kilted Barber in Perth will do the honours on Tuesday.
Previously quite rare, oesophageal cancer is now bought to be the 14th most common cancer in adults in the UK, with almost 9,000 people diagnosed each year.
But Peter was in the minority when he was diagnosed at such a young age, as around eight in 10 cases of oesophageal cancer develop in people aged 60 or older.
The shave will be followed by a coffee morning at Perth Riverside Church, North Muirton, on September 28, with all proceeds going to Macmillan.
Janet, along with other churchgoers, decided to host the event after losing four members of the congregation to cancer in the last year.
